Abstract: Secure communication is essential for reliable smart energy systems built on heterogeneous, resource-constrained Internet of Things devices. This study presents an integrated IoT security framework that combines threat modeling, lightweight authentication, software-defined networking, and machine-learning-based intrusion detection across device, communication, and control layers. Comparative evaluation against conventional, lightweight, and blockchain-based security approaches shows that the proposed framework achieves a 96.8% attack-detection rate, 98.7% authentication success, a 2.3% false-positive rate, and 98.2% packet delivery. It also reduces average end-to-end latency to 94 ms, control-message overhead to 11.2% and energy consumption to 3.12 J per node per day. The results indicate that coordinated cross-layer protection can improve cybersecurity, communication reliability, and energy efficiency without imposing excessive computational cost, making the framework suitable for scalable smart-grid, microgrid, and smart-building deployments.
